Equipment

So, what kind of trombone do you play and what’s special about it? Is there something cool that’s different about yours? How long have you had it, where did you get it… stuff like that. Modifications? Customizations?

Mine is a Getzen Custom 3047AF, which I got as an Army surplus horn so it’s a little beat up. I thought stripping the lacquer off of the bell would make it look better but the scratches went through to the brass, so I’m letting it tarnish to disguise that. Little did I know that stripping the lacquer would make the bell so ringy. So ringy in fact that when I play a C it rings for a bit after I finish the note. To fix that, I added resistance balancer made of leather around the bell. Not only does it look pretty cool, it makes the horn play with a little more focus and no more ringing either. The mouthpiece I use is a Giddings & Webster SA-100, which is like a Bach 5 New York.

  1. Ok, I ordered a Christian Lindberg 5CL yesterday in gold plate. I don’t mind playing with a little brighter sound and it might help my flexibility, especially in the upper register. I’d really like to be able to do the lip trills on the F and F# in the David.

  2. So, I got the 5CL and used it at brass band rehearsal last night and was very surprised. The bowl is somewhat shallower than what I was using, so I had to work hard to have a nice sound, which is probably a good thing. Endurance and range were the big factors. My endurance increased a lot and high notes just popped out without a struggle at all. I will have to spend some time to get used to it as it does play much brighter and work on my sound, but I think it’s a keeper. I’ve read a lot comments on the web from people who didn’t like it and don’t use it, but I’m thinking that they maybe didn’t give it a chance – you have to put a couple of weeks in before you can pass judgment since you’re not gonna be used to it out of the box. Anyway, I’m happy and it’s got me interested in practicing more and pushing my boundaries.
